I definitely made the right decision. I didn’t experience any hassles, threats, or violence. In fact, I made new friends and received recognition and admiration. I am proud of who I am and it doesn’t matter anymore what other people think. I’ll come out to anyone. I’ve got a loving family, and terrific friends, and it’s their opinion and acceptance that matters, nothing else.

Coming out of the closet doesn’t just happen overnight, it’s a process that you will be dealing with for the rest of your life. With every person you meet, you will have to make the decision whether to come out to them. It’s up to you to decide if you feel safe coming out and if it’s appropriate, or even necessary. It’s important to realize that your family and friends will also go through an understanding process. You have to be patient and willing to offer them as much information as you can. Remember that the older generation wasn’t exposed to homosexuality or even informed about it as much as we are today. So they too, need time to learn and accept it.

I had to develop courage and strength to come out and a lot of it came from my parents. They are strong and intelligent individuals, and raised me to believe in myself and what I stand for. They always taught me to do what’s right for me. So when I felt ready to come out, I did it for myself and not for anyone else. My parents’ acceptance was the most important thing to me, and receiving it really made me strong.
